We visited Leicester’s John Lewis store to discover some of the remarkable partners who bring one of the city’s favourite stores to life, offering warmth, friendly advice, and infectious enthusiasm for the fabulous range of products in store.
Bob Gill – Head of Branch
Bob Gill, branch manager since 2021, believes the true heartbeat of the store is its partners. “What makes our branch is the partners. They’re the soul of the store,” he says.
With 300 partners under his wing, many of whom have been here since the store opened 17 years ago, Bob takes pride in knowing their stories and supporting their wellbeing. A handson and approachable leader, he walks the entire building each morning to greet everyone. “You’re either a glass half empty or a glass half full kind of person. Life is too short to look at the half empty side,” he says.
Outside work, he enjoys running and golf, aiming to reach 8k in February. He remains engaged
with Leicester’s arts, culture, and community.

Vaishali Solanki – Brand Experience Manager
Vaishali has spent 17 years at John Lewis and is a bubbly, much-loved presence across the store. Having worked front and back of house and managed multiple floors and teams, she now brings her passion to her role as Brand Experience Manager. “You’re not just coming into work – people genuinely care about you,” she says of working at the store.
A mum of two young children, she recently joined the gym to keep up with their energy, finding it great for her mind, body, and soul. Outgoing and approachable, Vaishali loves connecting with her team and customers, creating memorable experiences, and bringing her infectious energy to every day: “When you love what you do, the energy comes naturally,” she says.

Bailey Walker – Customer Assistant
Bailey Walker has been part of the John Lewis family for four years, joining initially as a Christmas temp. What has kept him here is the trust and responsibility he’s been given.
“You’re given real ownership here. Managers have a hand on the wheel, but you’re trusted to get on with it,” he explains. Working in lighting, Bailey has made the area his own, thriving in a partnership model where everyone feels like an owner.
Outside work, he channels his creativity into filmmaking, producing short films and comedy projects, including a 2023 short promotional film about John Lewis which was praised by the company chairman.
“Here, you’re valued as an individual for what you can bring. When that happens, you’ve got no
reason to leave,” he says.

Emily Debrex – Customer Assistant
Emily, a Customer Assistant on the second floor, is outgoing and bubbly, known for her “can-do” attitude. “Being a partner at John Lewis has really helped my confidence grow. I wasn’t always as outgoing as I am now, and that’s thanks to the support and teamwork here,” she says.
Emily thrives on one to-one customer interactions, getting to know regulars and feeling at home in the supportive, family-like environment.
Outside work, she enjoys family time, walks, cinema trips, and reading. Looking ahead, she hopes to join an apprenticeship scheme and continue developing her skills—all while staying kind and going the extra mile for everyone she meets.

Steve Moore – Small Electricals Assistant
Steve Moore is set to celebrate 25 years with John Lewis this December. Over more than two decades, he has become a familiar face to colleagues and customers, selling everything from coffee machines to vacuum cleaners.
For Steve, the relationships matter more than sales targets. “I enjoy the people I work with, the customers, and the atmosphere. You can have a laugh, help someone find exactly what they need, and it just feels great when they come back and say thanks,” he says.
Outside work, Steve is a keen gamer, a go-karting enthusiast with 14 trophies, and a fan of 80s music and
Stranger Things memorabilia. He’s planning a relaxing break in the Cotswolds to celebrate his milestone.

Manuel Hurtado – Personal Styling Assistant
Manuel has been at John Lewis for nine years, starting as a Christmas temp before moving into catering, gifts, and now menswear as a personal stylist—a role he calls “perfect.” “This is my role, I love it. I put all my passion into getting this job…I’m proud to work here,” he says.
Originally from Argentina, Manuel moved to England 15 years ago with his husband.
Learning English and building a life here wasn’t easy, but he now thrives on creativity—styling customers, redecorating his home, and exploring new hobbies like photography. He values Leicester’s diversity and the inclusive culture at John Lewis, where he’s simply Manuel—accepted for who he is.

Jayesh Patel – Team Manager
Jayesh Patel manages the third floor, overseeing tech, sports, nursery, toys, financial services, and customer service. With over 20 years in retail—including stints at Best Buy in the U.S. and Currys—he brings expertise and a people-first approach to the role. “I genuinely love it here. We focus on behaviours and processes, not pushing sales, and that creates a really positive environment for both partners and customers,” he says. Family is central to Jayesh, who recently celebrated milestones including a new grandchild, a marriage, and the loss of his mother. This year, he looks forward to welcoming his daughter and grandkids from Seattle to Leicester, giving them a chance to see the store he’s so proud of.
