Loughborough University student Lorna Miller braved the cold Leicester streets on Saturday (February 8) in an effort to raise funds for her charity climb up Mount Kilimanjaro in September.

Lorna, who is studying accounts, is raising money for the Meningitis Research Foundation, alongside other university students, as it’s  a cause that is close to her family.

She said: “There was no choice in the charity which we are raising for, but it is a cause close to my family’s heart. My dad’s best friend’s daughter died from meningitis and my grandparents’ friend has been affected by it.”

Lorna’s personal goal, in her first proper effort to collect money for a good cause, is to raise £2,850 before she sets foot on Tanzania’s dormant volcanic mountain on Saturday September 6.

She said: “It is a really good cause, I am really excited t have this opportunity and I expect there will be a lot of training involved but I do a bit of sport so it shouldn’t be too daunting.”

Over the next few months the students will be doing various activities to help her given charity such as supermarket bag packs.

She added: “It is good to give whatever we all can, it makes such a difference to people’s lives and what is great is that it is a research charity so the more money we give the better the research.”
