Dressing for Ladies Day at Leicester Racecourse

The 14th annual Ladies Day event is set to take place at Leicester Racecourse this summer – the perfect excuse to find that fascinator, put on your favourite dress and enjoy a day of full on fabulousness.

Last year 9,000 people attended this event, which is crammed with music, fun, excitement and of course, the incomparable thrill of horse racing.

However, the iconic ‘best dressed competition’ is another definite highlight – a chance to get some appreciation for your fancy, fashionable efforts.

Dressing for Ladies’ Day at a race or event is all about balancing sophistication, style, and a bit of fun. Whether it’s a horse race, garden party, or other social gathering, here’s a list of tips to help you dress perfectly for the occasion:

1. Embrace Elegance

• Dress Code: Many Ladies’ Day events have a formal or semi- formal dress code. Think elegant dresses or skirts, but keep it classy and chic. Avoid overly revealing outfits.

• Length: Midi and knee-length dresses are a classic choice. However, depending on the event, you can go for a full-length gown if it’s more upscale.

2. Go for Statement Accessories

• Hats: A wide-brimmed hat or fascinator is often a must! The bigger and more stylish, the better. Just make sure it’s comfortable and stays put.

• Jewellery: Keep your jewellery minimal yet statement- making. A simple pair of earrings and a bracelet or a delicate necklace can complement your outfit beautifully.

3. Play with Colour

• Bright or Pastel Tones: Ladies’ Day tends to feature a lot of colour! Pastels like mint, peach, or lilac are fresh, while bold hues like emerald, ruby, or cobalt create a striking look. Avoid anything too dark unless it’s a very formal event.

• Patterns: Floral prints or geometric patterns are popular, but be sure not to overdo it. Pairing a patterned dress with a solid-colour accessory (like a hat) can create a lovely balance.

4. Consider the Weather

• Layer Up: If the weather is cooler, consider a lightweight shawl, pashmina, or a stylish tailored jacket that doesn’t take away from the elegance of your outfit.

• Shoes: Choose comfortable but chic shoes. High heels are popular, but if you’re going to be walking or standing a lot, opt for block heels or wedges for comfort.

5. Opt for a Chic Dress or Jumpsuit

• Dress: A well-fitted dress in a flattering silhouette is always a safe choice. A-line, fit-and-flare, or tailored styles work great for most body types.

• Jumpsuits: For a modern twist, a tailored jumpsuit can be just as chic as a dress. Look for one with stylish detailing such as wide-leg trousers or a statement sleeve.

6. Focus on Grooming

• Make sure your hair and makeup are well done. A soft, polished hairstyle (like waves or an elegant updo) is ideal.

• Makeup: Go for a fresh, natural look with some bold lipstick or subtle smoky eyes to keep things glamorous without going overboard.

7. Keep Comfort in Mind

• Footwear: If you’re wearing heels, bring a backup pair of flats or wedges for comfort, especially if you expect to be walking or standing for long periods.

• Fit: Ensure your clothes fit well and aren’t too tight or loose. This will make you feel confident and comfortable.

8. Bag it Right

• A chic clutch or a small crossbody bag can help complete your look. Stick to something small to avoid overcrowding your outfit. Avoid large, casual bags.

9. Personal Style

• Ultimately, feel free to express your personal style, but keep it elegant and polished. It’s an opportunity to have fun with fashion while maintaining sophistication.

10. Check the Event’s Specifics

• If the event has specific guidelines, such as themes or a colour palette, try to incorporate that into your look.

With these tips, you’ll be sure to stand out while looking sophisticated and stylish for Ladies’ Day!

Ladies Day takes place on Saturday, July 5 at Leicester Racecourse, which sits on Leicester Road, Oadby.
