When people think of Amsterdam, they often envision a vibrant party scene. However, this city — the capital of the Netherlands — also boasts a rich cultural heritage.
Amsterdam is renowned for its picturesque canals, world-class museums, and thriving art scene, making it one of the most bike- friendly cities in the world. It’s also home to the iconic painter Vincent van Gogh and was the location where Anne Frank wrote her famous diaries during her time in hiding with her family.

Places to Visit:
Anne Frank Museum
The Anne Frank Museum is a must-see during your trip to Amsterdam. Within the museum, you can view the bookshelf that concealed the secret annex where the Frank family hid, as well as Anne’s original black and red diary where her journey began. If you’re familiar with the history of Anne Frank and her family’s time in hiding, this experience is truly surreal. Walking through the room where Anne shared space with Fritz Pfeffer and seeing the height markings of Anne and her sister Margot on the wall during their time there is a poignant moment. A tip: book your tickets as soon as you book your flights, as this popular museum fills up quickly.
Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam, and Marken
For an authentic taste of Dutch culture, consider booking a tour into the countryside. On this bus tour, you’ll have the chance to visit the iconic windmills of Zaanse Schans, learn how traditional Dutch clogs are made, and sample some of the famous Dutch cheeses. Depending on the tour, you may also enjoy lunch in a fishing village and take a boat ride between Volendam and Marken. Tickets for these tours can be purchased online or at tourist information spots in central Amsterdam.
Things to Do:
Waffle Making
If you’re expecting the light, fluffy waffles typically eaten for breakfast, think again. Dutch waffles, or stroopwafels, are more like biscuits with a rich syrup centre. You can watch these sweet treats being made during your tour of Volendam and Marken, or you can book a separate activity to learn the process firsthand, depending on how much time you have in the city.
Bike Ride
It would almost be a crime to visit Amsterdam without renting a bike or joining a bike tour.
The city is packed with cyclists, and biking is one of the best ways to explore Amsterdam. Bike rentals are affordable, and you can use your own GPS to navigate the city. Alternatively, there are many guided bike tours available to help you discover some of Amsterdam’s hidden gems. Either way, you’ll be safe and fully immersed in the city’s bike-friendly culture.

Heineken Experience
Whether you’re a beer enthusiast or not, the Heineken Experience is an exciting way to learn about the brewing process and the history of Heineken, which dates back to 1867. Your ticket includes a guided tour and a glass of Heineken at the end.
Canal Cruise
A canal cruise is one of the best ways to take in the sights of Amsterdam while soaking in the culture. As you cruise along, your skipper will point out notable landmarks, such as the Skinny Bridge (perfect for sharing a kiss), the Red Light District, and the Anne Frank House. There are various cruise options available, including cheese and wine cruises, dinner cruises, or classic sightseeing cruises, depending on your preferences and budget.

Van Gogh Museum
For art lovers, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is a must-visit. It houses the world’s largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s work, including over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 750 letters. Highlights include his famous Sunflowers, Almond Blossom, and The Potato Eaters.

Food and Drinks:
Lagom
Lagom is a charming café in the heart of Amsterdam with a constant line outside—a sure sign of great food. It serves a variety of dishes throughout the day, and we highly recommend it for brunch. From breakfast options to burgers and sandwiches, as well as sweet treats for dessert, there’s something for everyone.
Majestic – Dam Square
Located in Dam Square, Majestic is one of the largest restaurants in the area, with a fantastic outdoor dining option. Enjoy the music and lively atmosphere of the square while savouring some delicious food.

Dutch Fries
A visit to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without trying Dutch fries, often topped with sauces and cheese. You can find many shops around the city offering this beloved snack, including popular spots like Mannekin Pis, Fabel Friet, and Vlaamse Fries.
Desserts
Amsterdam is filled with dessert shops offering a variety of sweet treats such as waffles, pancakes, stroopwafels, and ice cream. These indulgent delights are available with a choice of toppings and can be enjoyed in the shop or taken away as you stroll back to your hotel, as I often did.
Where to Stay
Amsterdam offers a variety of accommodations, and each neighbourhood has its own distinct charm. If you’re looking for luxury, consider staying at the Sofitel Legend The Grand, a beautiful hotel near the Red Light District that was once the city hall. For a more quirky and unique experience, check out The Pulitzer, which is located close to the Anne Frank House. This charming hotel is spread across several canal houses, providing a cozy and one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
Final Thoughts
Amsterdam is the perfect destination for a quick weekend getaway, allowing you to experience the sights, food, and biking culture without feeling rushed. With its blend of history, culture, and nightlife, the city has something for everyone. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to embrace the local culture, you can also visit one of the many coffee shops offering cannabis, although keep in mind that smoking weed in public places is now illegal.
