LEICESTERSHIRE’S WILDLIFE PARK IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF PRESERVING SOME OF THE WORLD’S RAREST ANIMALS.
Welcoming over half a million visitors every year, the world famous Twycross Zoo is the vibrant and colourful home to a variety of animals including Asian elephants, Western grey kangaroos and zebras from all over the world.
Set in the open Leicestershire countryside and spread over 80 acres of land, the specialist primate centre is renowned for its wide variety of primates including all four types of the great ape; chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utans and bonobos. The zoo is also a prime preserver of some of the world’s rarest animals, including the Amur leopards and Asian elephants.
Believe it or not, you can find some of the world’s most exquisite animals as your local residents!
Twycross Zoo first opened its doors to the public in May 1963, after animal enthusiasts Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans decided to expand their zoological collection, which later became a charitable trust in 1972. Since then the zoo has been recognised for the first UK births of thirteen different species including the bonobo, siamang, agile gibbon and woolly monkey.
At the heart of the wildlife sanctuary is its conservation project. Most of the species are part of an endangered species breeding programme and some are almost extinct.
The wildlife park is guaranteed to cater for all types of animal enthusiasts, offering a great family day out and providing an informative and fun day out for school trips, raising the awareness of conservational issues and highlighting the incredible and diverse animals in the world that are in need of protection.
BUT HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
Visit the zoo of course! All profits made are reinvested into the zoo’s conservation.
There are also other ways to help out – Do you fancy adopting some of the amazing and unique creatures or maybe you would like the chance of training to work with the animals yourself?!
Home to over 600 animals, including birds, reptiles, invertebrates and many endangered species, the zoo offers visitors an unforgettable experience. After a fun day seeing all the animals, you can relax and enjoy a delicious meal in Café Tibet, one of the onsite cafés at the zoo, whilst watching the majestic snow leopards.
Whatever you’re favourite animal, you’ll be sure to have a fun and memorable day out, as there is something for everyone at Leicestershire’s favourite animal wildlife conservation Twycross Zoo.
