A group of 10 De Montfort University students will be attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and visit a local school in Africa this August.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa measuring 19,334 feet high and the students will spend six days making the climb.
Anna Aldersley, 20, said: “I’ve always wanted to go travelling and the fact that I get to help people at the same time is amazing. I’m pretty nervous about all the possible dangers we could face, but it’ll be worth it knowing that I’ve helped to change lives.
“I don’t think I’ll be the same person when I return. This is hopefully the first of many adventures to come.”
Each of the students hope to raise £2700 for the Children Reach International charity, which reaches out to children around the world and helps to improve their quality of life by providing education, food and healthcare.
The group, which will be travelling on August 20, plan to raise the money for the trip by conducting a number of fundraisers and events.
Anna Aldersley, member of the De Montfort University Rowing society, hopes to complete a rowathlon to fund the trip.
Further plans are being discussed for a local Leicestershire sixth form to hold a non-uniform day in attempt to raise the money needed.
A representative from De Montfort University commented: “It’s great to see students getting actively involved in charity events such as this. We hope they will continue the good work and wish them success in their journey.”
