Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire’s 2026 Park Run Mission

Parkruns across Leicestershire have become a cherished Saturday morning tradition.

Taking place in parks and open spaces such as Victoria Park, Watermead Country Park, Belvoir Castle, and Beacon Hil; these free, weekly events bring together runners, walkers, families and volunteers from all backgrounds.

What started as a fitness initiative has evolved into a popular international event.

Parkruns also nurture a shared appreciation for public green spaces. They offer an opportunity for residents to participate in activities in their local parks and open spaces. The Parkrun community emphasises the importance of caring their environment, leaving parks clean, and respecting wildlife. They are compassionate and demonstrates responsibility for looking after our green spaces.

The spirit of a Parkrun is inclusive, volunteer-led, and supportive. Parkruns have meaningful benefits for physical health, mental wellbeing, and community cohesion. These events also demonstrate core civic values that benefit our communities. Hundreds of volunteers across the county give their time by organising, guiding, marshalling, or simply offering encouragement to those who attend.

Not only health benefits are gained, but friendships are founded. Parkruns are welcome to all, no matter what age, background, or fitness level. There are so many stories of individuals who have overcome adversity and have found friendship and community through their local Parkrun.

Perhaps most importantly, Parkrun demonstrates the power of community to uplift wellbeing. Not just physically, but socially and emotionally. By showing what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose, it strengthens belonging and pride in local areas.

Parkruns are receiving national and international recognition. His Majesty the King supported his local Parkrun on Saturday 31st January at Sandringham, in support of Move Against Cancer. The King offered encouragement to those involved by clapping and cheering as parkrunners passed.

This year, I am aiming to participate at a Parkrun in every location across Leicestershire. My aim is to encourage themed Parkruns throughout the year, and to highlight key issues that affect communities in Leicestershire. I encourage you to join your local park run and reap the benefits that come with participating. If you see me, please say hello, and let me know what Parkruns mean to you and your community.
