Retro Revival – Embrace the Retro Trend with Thrifty Summer Threads

Last year, we saw more celebrities working vintage into their day-to-day wardrobe – embracing retro trends, individualism and the super stylish looks of yesteryear…

It’s something that’s set to continue into 2023, as buying second-hand becomes second nature to more and more people.

Here are our top tops for shopping the retro look, and doing your bit for sustainability, whilst looking effortlessly chic this spring/summer!

Get Thrifty

When it comes to shopping for vintage styles, don’t be afraid to delve into a retro charity shop, for a few authentic accessories and pieces from back in the day.

Our top choices right here in Leicester, are Sue Ryder Vintage and Retro store, (located in Loseby Lane) and White Rose, a pre-loved fashion store which stands in Market Street.

The store was opened last year, by Leicestershire actress Bella Ramsey – star of HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’, who’s a big fan of sustainability.

“Materials aren’t going to last forever – they will eventually run out, and if we want to secure a future for ourselves then sustainability is the path that we have to take,” she said.

When it comes to retro style, nothing is cooler than finding a few authentic threads from the actual era itself – a fringe bag, or an embroidered top at a fraction of the price that you’d find on the High Street.

Prints that Pop

If there’s one thing that stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to imitating 70s fashion (a style which seems as popular as ever this year), it’s the sensational prints which took centre stage back in the day.

The good news is, there are plenty in the shops right now to make sure you make a statement right now, in 2023.

Whether it’s oversized flowers on a mini-skirt, or striking stripes on a simple shirt, make sure you have something in your wardrobe that really pops this spring/summer – think turquoise, orange… Zesty head turning patterns that scream fun and nostalgia all the way.

White is alright

When it comes to colour, you can’t go wrong with wearing white on those warm summer days/nights – a refreshing hue which serves the duel purpose of keeping you cool, whilst showing off your radiant tan.

A plain white whimsical maxi dress or top, can act as a great canvas for bold and extravagant accessories to take centre stage, whether it’s a boho-style dream-catcher necklace, or a set of turquoise beads, which will really pop against the outfit.

Accessorise the look with brown leather sandals and a suede fringe jacket for when the nights get a little chilly.

Accessories

A woven bag is a chic addition to any spring/summer outfit this year, and bang on trend for this season’s quirky retro revival.

Whether it’s something bold and simple, or more of an intricate weave, throwing one of these over your shoulder is a sure fire way to look casually cool and stylish as you head out for a picnic, or a casual country stroll.

Combined with low slung heels, shades and a casual straw or fedora hat, you’ll be comfortable as you strut along in the sun – smiling and turning heads as you go.

Bobo Babe

When you’re finishing off your 70s summer chic look, remember the key is to make your outfit look good and well put together, without it looking too over-thought, and overly polished.

When thinking about hair, go for a loose and tousled look, as opposed to something which looks immaculately groomed and super refined.

A few casual braids and flowers can be thrown in for good measure – but only if the rest of the look is kept simple. Remember, less is more.

Keep your look and your spirit light, and savour those sunny spring and summer moments with ease!
