We all know that the Great British Summer never lasts long enough, so you should make the most of every opportunity to be out in the sunshine while you can! Here is a list of some brilliant community events to get involved in that are fun and mostly free!

Summer kicks off with the Western Park Festival on Saturday 5th July from 11am to 8pm,  a one-day  event that brings together a variety of emerging bands and acoustic musicians. It is suitable for people of all ages, as there’s a designated Kids Zone featuring entertainers and games, as well as a Real Ale Tent for those who fancy trying out some new tipples, food stalls and much more. With children going free and adults only £1, this is definitely not to be missed!

Next up we have the City Festival, now in its second year, and  after 2013’s resounding success it promises to be even bigger and better than before! Lasting for ten days from 16-25 August this is a good excuse to do something with the children during the holidays if they start to get bored. As well as incorporating some of the previous events like the Sky Ride and Leicester Belgrave Mela, this year there are some exciting new additions, including Night of Festivals, a programme celebrating freedom and independence through art, and Safe House, a large-scale outdoor performance.

A lovely way to end the school holidays will be to attend the Knighton Park Family Fun Day which is being billed as an excellent day out. It lasts from 11am-5pm on 7th September, and the previous year’s activities involved a RSPCA fun dog show, inflatable rides and an acrobatic display so we can be sure to expect even more entertainment this time around!

Bands on Parks is a fantastic outdoor event that started in June but will see you through until the middle of September.

It consists of a series of brass band concerts in various parks and green spaces, so watch out for those around the city.

Finally, don’t forget to visit the Belgrave Hall Good Food Fair, which takes place on 27-28 September. With delicious bakery treats, organic products and home-made delicacies it’s the perfect event if you appreciate fine food and want to meet some of the local people who help put it on your table!
